Poseidon, at best, could shake the universe. Numerous sources, such as the Orphic Hymns, the Iliad and so forth all paint the picture that Zeus would easily overpower Poseidon. The idea that Zeus couldn't beat Poseidon is ludicrous. There's no version where Poseidon and Zeus scheme against Hades as far as I know, and I've read quite a few versions. Zeus was worried that one of his brothers might become king, so he picked first knowing which straw was longest, then he had Poseidon pick since Poseidon wasn't really vying for the thrown, and that left Hades stuck with the Underworld. However, in some versions, Hades wanted to be king since he was the eldest. In MOST versions of the story, Hades was happy about that position, because most gods weren't fans of him anyway, and the feeling was mutual. When they did so, Zeus got the sky, Poseidon got the sea, and Hades got the Underworld. The main version of the story is that after they collaborated in taking down Cronus and the rest of the Titans, they decided that the most fair way to decide who ruled who would be to draw straws.

That was of the top of my head a bit here or there I might have missed, do feel free to correct it, if I missed anything. I know there are a lot of different versions of the story, but the main one told is that after they defeated Kronos, both Poseidon and Zeus realised the Underworld and Tartarus needed someone to watch and safe guard it so both Zeus and Poseidon teamed up to place Haed there.
